Helio Solar Roast Coffee

BRANDING, PACKAGING & WEBSITE

HELIO SOLAR ROAST COFFEE

Helio Coffee is fair-trade sourced coffee that is roasted in house by solar panels. The owners invented their own solar machines through a series of iterations, failures and hard work.

The coffee shop itself is also sustainable, running on the solar energy. Using solar power allows them to roast with a gentle heat resulting in a lower temperature roast. They roast the coffee slow and low, giving their coffee beans a smooth taste.

GOAL SETTING

CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT:

One of the main goals for Helio Coffee was telling their unique story to differentiate themselves from the other coffee brands. Not only are they fairtrade, but the beans are roasted in house by hand-made solar panels.

RETAIL SALES INCREASE:

Helio’s focus is on wholesale. They are in the process of getting their coffee to as many grocery stores as they can, starting local and branching out nationally.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING:

With all the time and energy that went into fairtrade sourcing and roasting the beans efficiently, Helio needed to have matching packaging to carry the sustainability message all the way through.

CUSTOMER PRODUCT EDUCATION:

Because solar technology is still young, the coffee beans can only be roasted slowly on a low temperature. Helio wanted to communicate the uniqueness of their coffee taste that is a consequence of their special roasting process.

SUSTAINABLE REBRANDING

RESEARCH

The unique story of Helio Coffee needed to be visualized in the branding. The use of the sun and solar panel imagery were brought into the logo, supporting marks, patterns, colors and textures. The compostable foil bag is just like the solar panels used to roast the beans.

LOGOTYPE DEVELOPMENT

First ideas and sketches were made to reflect the look and feel of the solar panels. These ideas are angular and strong. A masculine, techno-logic feel.

The angular and strong type did not feel right. Helio Coffee was warm and welcoming like the sun’s energy.

Sun rays were in the previous branding, including a large mural outside the store. To reflect sun rays, the type was put on a slight angle upwards.
